Evidence
Decoding the DNA of the creative process.

About the project:
EVIDENCE, a collection of new work by Barry Sutton, sets out to visually chart the anatomy of the creative process itself—a subject explored in words for centuries but rarely dissected in visual form. Using AI diffusion models and LLMs, he mines vast terabytes of creative works spanning human history, seeking to capture the hidden layers beneath every work of art: the sketches, visual references, intuitive leaps, and the subconscious impulses that inform each decision. The resulting images are not simply inquiries about the mystery of the creative process; they are manifestations of that inquiry, embodying the data, themes, and structures that have shaped art across millennia. Each piece becomes a work of art in its own right—a visual artifact of this expansive investigation.
-
“AI enables me to reference an unprecedented memory of creative works, from ancient handprints on cave walls to masterpieces of art history and the visual noise of social media. I am tracing a thread that connects us across cultures, eras, and modes of expression, revealing the shared DNA of creativity that defines us all.”
This extensive mining of visual history and artistic lineage gives form to each piece, transforming data into aesthetic insight, algorithm into art.
Evidence offers the viewer a pause—a space to consider not just the creative output itself, but the invisible currents that shape it. Each piece is an entryway into the long legacy of the creative process, where history, intuition, and technological memory converge into something new. “My aim is to present not only artifacts of inquiry but complete works that, in their composition, gesture toward the profound forces driving us to create.” Each piece is an invitation to explore both the mystery and the shared universality of making art, inviting viewers to connect deeply with the essence of what we leave behind and why.

Core Category Definitions
Temporal Evidence Captures how time manifests within the piece, from immediate moments to eternal cycles. Documents the temporal aspects of creative consciousness through digital preservation.
Material Analysis The fundamental substance and texture that comprises the piece's visual foundation. Examines the physical and digital properties of creative manifestation.
Structural Analysis How the piece's underlying organization is transformed or broken. Maps the patterns and organizational systems that emerge in creative processes.
Emergent Phenomena Patterns and shapes that arise from the interaction of other elements. Documents unexpected formations and manifestations of creative energy.
Fibonacci Sequence Mathematical relationships found in compositional elements, specifically focusing on golden ratio (1.618) alignments and related numerical sequences.
